فَهَلْ يَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَّا السَّاعَةَ اَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ بَغْتَةً ۚ فَقَدْ جَاۤءَ اَشْرَاطُهَا ۚ فَاَنّٰى لَهُمْ اِذَا جَاۤءَتْهُمْ ذِكْرٰىهُمْ   ( محمد: ١٨ )

fahal
فَهَلْ
Then do
yanẓurūna
يَنظُرُونَ
they wait
illā
إِلَّا
but
l-sāʿata
ٱلسَّاعَةَ
(for) the Hour
an
أَن
that
tatiyahum
تَأْتِيَهُم
it should come to them
baghtatan
بَغْتَةًۖ
suddenly?
faqad
فَقَدْ
But indeed
jāa
جَآءَ
have come
ashrāṭuhā
أَشْرَاطُهَاۚ
its indications
fa-annā
فَأَنَّىٰ
Then how
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
idhā
إِذَا
when
jāathum
جَآءَتْهُمْ
has come to them
dhik'rāhum
ذِكْرَىٰهُمْ
their reminder

Fahal yanzuroona illas Saa'ata an taatiyahum baghtatan faqad jaaa'a ashraatuhaa; fa-annnaa lahum izaa jaaa'at hum zikraahum (Muḥammad 47:18)

Sahih International:

Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then how [i.e., what good] to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance? (Muhammad [47] : 18)

1 Mufti Taqi Usmani

They are waiting for nothing but for the Hour (of Doom) that it should come upon them suddenly. So, its signs have already come. Then, once it will come upon them, how would they have an opportunity to accept the advice (already) given to them?
