وَلَوْ اَنَّآ اَهْلَكْنٰهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ مِّنْ قَبْلِهٖ لَقَالُوْا رَبَّنَا لَوْلَآ اَرْسَلْتَ اِلَيْنَا رَسُوْلًا فَنَتَّبِعَ اٰيٰتِكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ نَّذِلَّ وَنَخْزٰى ( طه: ١٣٤ )
Wa law annaaa ahlaknaahum bi'azaabim min qablihee laqaaloo Rabbanaa law laaa arsalta ilainaa Rasoolan fanattabi's Aayaatika min qabli an nazilla wa nakhzaa (Ṭāʾ Hāʾ 20:134)
English Sahih:
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him, they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?" (Taha [20] : 134)

ഇതിനു മുമ്പ് വല്ല കടുത്ത ശിക്ഷയും നല്കി നാം ഇവരെ നശിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നുവെങ്കില് ഇവര് തന്നെ പറയുമായിരുന്നു: ''ഞങ്ങളുടെ നാഥാ! നീ എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങള്ക്കൊരു ദൂതനെ അയച്ചുതന്നില്ല? എങ്കില് ഞങ്ങള് അപമാനിതരും പറ്റെ നിന്ദ്യരും ആകും മുമ്പെ നിന്റെ വചനങ്ങളെ പിന്പറ്റുമായിരുന്നുവല്ലോ.'' (ത്വാഹാ [20] : 134)

ഇതിനു മുമ്പ് വല്ല ശിക്ഷ കൊണ്ടും നാം അവരെ നശിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നുവെങ്കില് അവര് പറയുമായിരുന്നു: ഞങ്ങളുടെ രക്ഷിതാവേ, നീ എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങളുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് ഒരു ദൂതനെ അയച്ചുതന്നില്ല? എങ്കില് ഞങ്ങള് അപമാനിതരും നിന്ദിതരുമായിത്തീരുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് നിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടാന്തങ്ങളെ ഞങ്ങള് പിന്തുടരുമായിരുന്നു.
