An-Nisa Verse 131 | 4:131

وَلِلّٰهِ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الْاَرْضِۗ وَلَقَدْ وَصَّيْنَا الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْكِتٰبَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ وَاِيَّاكُمْ اَنِ اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ ۗوَاِنْ تَكْفُرُوْا فَاِنَّ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الْاَرْضِۗ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ غَنِيًّا حَمِيْدًا ( النساء: ١٣١ )

walillahi

وَلِلَّهِ

And for Allah

mā

مَا

(is) whatever

fī

فِى

(is) in

l-samāwāti

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

wamā

وَمَا

and whatever

fī

فِى

(is) in

l-arḍi

ٱلْأَرْضِۗ

the earth

walaqad

وَلَقَدْ

And surely

waṣṣaynā

وَصَّيْنَا

We have instructed

alladhīna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

ūtū

أُوتُوا۟

were given

l-kitāba

ٱلْكِتَٰبَ

the Book

min

مِن

from

qablikum

قَبْلِكُمْ

before you

wa-iyyākum

وَإِيَّاكُمْ

and yourselves

ani

أَنِ

that

ittaqū

ٱتَّقُوا۟

you fear

l-laha

ٱللَّهَۚ

Allah

wa-in

وَإِن

But if

takfurū

تَكْفُرُوا۟

you disbelieve

fa-inna

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

lillahi

لِلَّهِ

for Allah

mā

مَا

(is) whatever

fī

فِى

(is) in

l-samāwāti

ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

wamā

وَمَا

and whatever

fī

فِى

(is) in

l-arḍi

ٱلْأَرْضِۚ

the earth

wakāna

وَكَانَ

And is

l-lahu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

ghaniyyan

غَنِيًّا

Free of need

ḥamīdan

حَمِيدًا

Praiseworthy

Wa lillaahi maafis samaawaati wa maa fil ard; wa laqad wassainal lazeena ootul Kitaaba min qablikum wa iyyaakum anit taqul laah; wa intakfuroo fa inna lillaahi maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ard; wa kaanal laahu Ghaniyyan hameedaa (an-Nisāʾ 4:131)

Sahih International:

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear Allah. But if you disbelieve – then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy. (An-Nisa [4] : 131)

To Allah belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. We have ordered those who were given the Book before you, and (ordered) you yourselves to fear Allah. If you disbelieve, then, surely to Allah belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. Allah is All-Independent, Ever-Praised.

And to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And assuredly We commanded those who were given the Book before you, and (We command) you (O Muslims) to act in piety and reverence for God, fearful of disobedience to Him (in all matters including especially observing your mutual rights). Yet if you disbelieve (and despite this admonishment act with ingratitude to Him, then bear in mind that) to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth: (if you believe in Him and thank Him, this adds nothing to Him, or if you disbelieve in Him and become ungrateful to Him, this does not diminish anything from Him. For) God is All-Wealthy and Self-Sufficient (absolutely independent of all His creatures), All-Praiseworthy (as your Lord, Who provides for you and all other beings and meets all your needs).

To God belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. We have charged those who were given the Scripture, meaning the scriptures, before you, namely, the Jews and Christians, and you, O people of the Qur'n; `Fear God', fear His punishment, by being obedient to Him. And We said to them and to you; `If you disbelieve, in what you have been charged with, then to God belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth', as creatures, possessions and servants, and He will not be harmed by your disbelief; God is ever Independent, of the need for His creation or their worship, Praised, praise-worthy for what He does with them.

27 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Necessity of Taqwa of Allah

Allah says;

وَللّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الَارْضِ

And to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth.

Allah states that He is the Owner of the heavens and earth and that He is the Supreme Authority over them.

Hence Allah's statement,

وَلَقَدْ وَصَّيْنَا الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَابَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَإِيَّاكُمْ
.

And verily, We have recommended to the People of the Scripture before you, and to you,

meaning, We have recommended to you what We recommended to the People of Scriptures;

أَنِ اتَّقُواْ اللّهَ

that you have Taqwa of Allah.
Taqwa of Allah, by worshipping Him Alone without partners.

Allah then said,

وَإِن تَكْفُرُواْ فَإِنَّ لِلّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الَارْضِ

But if you disbelieve, then unto Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth.

In another Ayah, Allah said that Musa said to his people,

إِن تَكْفُرُواْ أَنتُمْ وَمَن فِى الاٌّرْضِ جَمِيعًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ

"If you disbelieve, you and all on the earth together, then verily, Allah is Rich (free of any need), Owner of all praise." (14;8)

Allah said,

فَكَفَرُواْ وَتَوَلَّواْ وَّاسْتَغْنَى اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ غَنِىٌّ حَمِيدٌ

So they disbelieved and turned away. But Allah was not in need (of them). And Allah is Rich (free of any need), Worthy of all praise. (64;6)

وَكَانَ اللّهُ غَنِيًّا حَمِيدًا

and Allah is Ever Rich (free of any needs), Worthy of all praise.

meaning, He is far too Rich than to need His servants, and worthy of all praise in all His decisions and commandments.

The meaning of Allah's statement,

وَلِلّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الَارْضِ وَكَفَى بِاللّهِ وَكِيلً
