6 Ahmed Ali

If you should see them when they are stood before the Fire, they will say: "Ah would that we were sent back (to the world)! We shall not deny the signs of our Lord, and be among those who believe."

7 Ahmed Raza Khan

And if you see them when they will be placed above hell, they will say, “Alas, if only we might be sent back and not deny the signs of our Lord, and become Muslims!”

8 Ali Quli Qarai

Were you to see when they are brought to a halt by the Fire, whereupon they will say, ‘If only we were sent back [into the world]! Then we will not deny the signs of our Lord, and we will be among the faithful!’

9 Ali Ünal

If you (O Messenger) could see them when they are made to stand by the Fire, and (in dread of being thrown into it, as if they forgot that they denied their associating partners with God) they say: "Oh, would that we were brought back (to the world)! Then we would not deny the signs and Revelations of our Lord and would be among the believers!"

10 Amatul Rahman Omar

Could you but see (them) when they are made to stand before the Fire (making a full appraisal of it). They will say then, `Oh! would that we could be sent back (to have a chance to mend our ways), then we would not cry lies to the revelations of our Lord and would be of the believers.´

11 English Literal

And if you see/understand, if they were suspended/stood on the fire, so they said: "Oh, if only we be returned and we not lie/deny/falsify with our Lord`s verses/evidences, and we be from the believers."

12 Faridul Haque

And if you see them when they will be placed above hell, they will say, “Alas, if only we might be sent back and not deny the signs of our Lord, and become Muslims!”

13 Hamid S. Aziz

Nay! Now is shown clearly to them what they did hide before; and were they to be sent back, they would return to that which they were forbidden, for they are liars.

14 Hilali & Khan

If you could but see when they will be held over the (Hell) Fire! They will say: "Would that we were but sent back (to the world)! Then we would not deny the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, revelations, etc.) of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!"

15 Maulana Mohammad Ali

And they forbid (others) from it, and they keep away from it; and they ruin none but their own souls while they perceive not.

If you, O Muhammad (s), could see when they are made to stand, [when] they are exposed, before the Fire, and they say, `Oh (y is for exclamation) would that we might be returned, to the world; then we would not deny the signs of our Lord, but we would be among the believers!' (read nukadhdhibu and naknu as a new [independent] sentence; or read nukadhdhiba and nakna as the [subjunctive] response to the optative [clause]; or read nukadhdhibu and nakna). The response to the clause `if [you could see]' would be `you would be seeing a terrible thing indeed'.

Wishes and Hopes Do Not Help One When He Sees the Torment

Allah tells;

وَلَوْ تَرَىَ إِذْ وُقِفُواْ عَلَى النَّارِ

If you could but see when they will be held over the (Hell) Fire!

Allah mentions the condition of the disbelievers when they are made to stand before the Fire on the Day of Resurrection and witness its chains and restraints, along with seeing the horrible, momentous conditions in the Fire with their own eyes. This is when,

فَقَالُواْ يَا لَيْتَنَا نُرَدُّ وَلَا نُكَذِّبَ بِأيَاتِ رَبِّنَا وَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُوْمِنِينَ

They will say;"Would that we were but sent back (to the world)! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord, and we would be of the believers!"

They wish that they would be sent back to the life of the world so that they could perform righteous deeds, refrain from disbelieving in the Ayat of their Lord and be among the believers.
