حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِيْ عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَّوَجَدَ عِنْدَهَا قَوْمًا ەۗ قُلْنَا يٰذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ اِمَّآ اَنْ تُعَذِّبَ وَاِمَّآ اَنْ تَتَّخِذَ فِيْهِمْ حُسْنًا ( الكهف: ٨٦ )
Hattaaa izaa balagha maghribash shamsi wajadahaaa taghrubu fee 'aynin hami'a tinw wa wajada 'indahaa qawmaa; qulnaa yaa Zal Qarnaini immaaa an tu'az ziba wa immaaa an tattakhiza feehim husnaa (al-Kahf 18:86)
English Sahih:
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water, and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allah] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness." (Al-Kahf [18] : 86)
Muhammad Hamidullah:
Et quand il eut atteint le Couchant, il trouva que le soleil se couchait dans une source boueuse, et, auprès d'elle il trouva une peuplade [impie]. Nous dîmes: «O Dûl-Qarnayn! ou tu les châties, ou tu uses de bienveillance à leur égard». (Al-Kahf [18] : 86)

Ayant parcouru la Terre, il atteignit la limite de la Terre du côté du Couchant et vit le soleil se coucher en descendant dans une source contenant une boue noire. Il trouva dans cette contrée un peuple de mécréants. Nous lui avons alors donné deux choix les concernant: Ô Dhû al-Qarnayn, soit tu châties ces gens par la mort ou par une autre peine, soit tu les traites avec bienfaisance.
