Ali Ünal

No! Rather, whoever submits his whole being to God (and does so) as one devoted to doing good, aware that God is seeing him, his reward is with his Lord, and all such will have no fear (in this world and the next, for they will always find My help and support with them), nor will they grieve.

Amatul Rahman Omar

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

Aye! whosoever submitteth himself unto Allah and he is a well-doer-his hire is with his Lord; no fear shall come on them nor shall they grieve.

Faridul Haque

Yes, why not? Whoever submits his face for the sake of Allah, and is virtuous, his reward is with his Lord; and there shall be no fear upon them nor shall they grieve.

Hamid S. Aziz

Nay, whoever surrenders his face (his countenance, nature, honour, glory, cause, will, his whole self) to Allah, and does good, he shall have his reward from his Lord, and no fear shall be on them, and they shall not grieve.

Hilali & Khan

Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah's Religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin (good-doer i.e. performs good deeds totally for Allah's sake only without any show off or to gain praise or fame, etc., and in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah's Messenger Muhammad Peace be upon him) then his reward is with his Lord (Allah), on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. [See Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Vol. 1, Page 154].

Talal Itani

In fact, whoever submits himself to God, and is a doer of good, will have his reward with his Lord—they have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve.

English Literal

Yes/certainly, who submitted/surrendered his faith/direction to God and he is (a) good doer, so for him his reward (is) at his Lord and no fear/fright on them and nor they be saddened/grieving.

Abul Ala Maududi

The fact is that no one has any special claim to Paradise; whoever surrenders himself to Allah in obedience and follows the Right Way, shall get his reward from his Lord: there shall be neither fear nor grief for such people.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Nay, whoever submits himself entirely to Allah and he is the doer of good (to others), he has his reward from his Lord, and there is no fear for such nor shall they grieve.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

Yes! But whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah's religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin then his reward is with his Lord (Allah), on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Nay, but whosoever surrendereth his purpose to Allah while doing good, his reward is with his Lord; and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

Tafsir jalalayn

Nay, but, others will also enter Paradise, namely, whoever submits his purpose to God, that is, adheres to His commands (wajh, `face' [sc. `purpose'], is here mentioned because it is the most noble part of the body, so that [when it has submitted] there is all the more reason for the other parts [to follow]), being virtuous, affirming God's Oneness, his reward is with his Lord, the reward of his deeds being Paradise, and no fear shall befall them, neither shall they grieve, in the Hereafter.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Yes! But whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah's religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin.

meaning, "Whoever performs deeds in sincerity, for Allah alone without partners."

In a similar statement, Allah said,

So if they dispute with you (Muhammad) say;"I have submitted myself to Allah (in Islam), and (so have) those who follow me." (3;20)

Abu Al-Aliyah and Ar-Rabi said that,
(Yes! But whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah) means,

"Whoever is sincere with Allah."

Also, Sa`id bin Jubayr said that,

(Yes! But whoever submits) means, he is sincere.

(his face (himself)) meaning, in his religion.

(and he is a Muhsin) following the Messenger.

For there are two conditions for deeds to be accepted;

the deed must be performed for Allah's sake alone and

conform to the Shariah.

When the deed is sincere, but does not conform to the Shariah, then it will not be accepted.

The Messenger of Allah said,

Whoever performs a deed that does not conform with our matter (religion), then it will be rejected.

This Hadith was recorded by Muslim.

Therefore, the good deeds of the priests and rabbis will not be accepted, even if they are sincerely for Allah alone, because these deeds do not conform with the method of the Messenger, who was sent for all mankind.

Allah said regarding such cases,

And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust. (25;23)

As for those who disbelieved, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one thinks it to be water, until he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing. (24;39)

and,

Some faces, that Day will be humiliated. Laboring, weary. They will enter in the hot blazing Fire. They will be given to drink from a boiling spring. (88;2-5)

When the deed conforms to the Shariah outwardly, but the person did not perform it sincerely for Allah alone, the deed will also be rejected, as in the case of the hypocrites and those who do their deeds to show off.

Similarly, Allah said,

Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salah (the prayer), they stand with laziness to be seen by people, and they do not remember Allah but little. (4;142)

and,

So woe unto those performers of Salah (prayers) (hypocrites). Those who delay their Salah (from their stated fixed times). Those who do good deeds only to be seen (of men). And withhold Al-Ma`un (small kindnesses). (107;4-7)

This is why Allah said,

So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord. (18;110)

He also said in this Ayah,

Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah (follows Allah's religion of Islamic Monotheism) and he is a Muhsin.

Allah's statement,

Shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve,

guaranteed them the rewards and safety from what they fear and should avoid.

(There shall be no fear on them) in the future,

(nor shall they grieve) about what they abandoned in the past.

Moreover, Sa`id bin Jubayr said,

" (There shall be no fear on them) in the Hereafter, and
(nor shall they grieve) about their imminent death."
