Sahih International:

And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief.

1 A. J. Arberry

We have indeed turned it about amongst them, so that they may remember; yet most men refuse all but unbelief.

2 Abdul Haleem

Many times We have repeated this to people so that they might take heed, but most persist in their ingratitude.

3 Abdul Majid Daryabadi

And We set it forth among them, that they may be admonished, but most men begrudge aught save infidelity.

4 Abdullah Yusuf Ali

And We have distributed the (water) amongst them, in order that they may celebrate (our) praises, but most men are averse (to aught) but (rank) ingratitude.

5 Abul Ala Maududi

We present the same phenomenon over and over again before them so that they may learn a lesson from it; but most people decline to adopt any other attitude than of disbelief and ingratitude.

6 Ahmed Ali

And We distribute it among them in various ways that they may ponder and reflect; yet most men disdain everything but denial and thanklessness.

7 Ahmed Raza Khan

And indeed We kept cycles of water among them that they may remember; so most men did not accept, except to be ungrateful.

8 Ali Quli Qarai

Certainly We distribute it among them so that they may take admonition. But most people are only intent on ingratitude.

9 Ali Ünal

Assuredly We distribute it among them (without depriving any) so that they may remember and so be mindful. But most of humankind obstinately refuse to do anything except showing ingratitude.

10 Amatul Rahman Omar

And We have explained this (topic) to them in diverse ways so that they may take heed, but most of the people would refuse (to adopt any other attitude) except (that of) disbelief.

11 English Literal

And We had purified it/detailed it linguistically between them (so) they mention/remember , so most of the people refused/hated except (insistent) disbelief.

12 Faridul Haque

And indeed We kept cycles of water among them that they may remember; so most men did not accept, except to be ungrateful.

13 Hamid S. Aziz

That We may quicken therewith the dead land, and slake the thirst of the things We have created - beasts and men in great numbers.

14 Hilali & Khan

And indeed We have distributed it (rain or water) amongst them in order that they may remember the Grace of Allah, but most men refuse (or deny the Truth or Faith) and accept nothing but disbelief or ingratitude.

15 Maulana Mohammad Ali

That We may give life thereby to a dead land, and give it for drink to cattle and many people that We have created.

16 Mohammad Habib Shakir

And certainly We have repeated this to them that they may be mindful, but the greater number of men do not consent to aught except denying.

17 Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And verily We have repeated it among them that they may remember, but most of mankind begrudge aught save ingratitude.

18 Muhammad Sarwar

We send them rain from time to time so that they may take heed. Many people have responded, but ungratefully.

19 Qaribullah & Darwish

We have indeed turned it about them, so that they remember; yet most people refuse all except disbelief.

20 Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

And indeed We have distributed it among them in order that they may remember the grace of Allah, but most men refuse (out of) gratitude.

21 Wahiduddin Khan

We have explained it to them in diverse ways, so that they may take heed, but most persist in their ingratitude.

22 Talal Itani

We have circulated it among them, that they may reflect, but most people persist in thanklessness.

23 Tafsir jalalayn

And verily We have distributed it, the water, among them, so that they may remember (li-yadhdhakkar should actually be li-yatadhakkar, but the t' has been assimilated with the dhl; a variant reading has li- yadhkur), that is to say, [so that they may remember] therewith the grace of God. But most people are only intent on ingratitude, on denial of the grace, saying, `We have received [this] rain because of such-and- such a storm'.

24 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And indeed We have distributed it among them in order that they may remember,

means, `We cause rain to fall on this land and not on that, and We cause the clouds to pass over one land and go to another, where We cause sufficient rain to fall so that its people have plenty, but not one drop falls on the first land.'

There is a reason and great wisdom behind this.

Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas`ud, may Allah be pleased with them said;

"One year does not have more rain than another, but Allah distributes the rain as He wills. Then he recited this Ayah;

And indeed We have distributed it (rain or water) amongst them in order that they may remember the grace of Allah, but most men refuse (out of) ingratitude."

meaning, so that they may be reminded, when Allah brings the dead earth back to life, that He is able to bring the dead and dry bones back to life, or that those from whom rain is withheld are suffering this because of some sin they have committed, so that they may give it up.

but most men refuse (out of) ingratitude.

Ikrimah said,

"This refers to those who say that rain comes because of such and such a star."

This view of Ikrimah is similar to the authentic Hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim;

one day after a night's rain, the Messenger of Allah said to his Companions;

Do you know what your Lord says?

They said;"Allah and His Messenger know best."

He said;

He says;

"This morning some of My servants became believers in Me, and some became disbelievers. As for the one who said, `We have been given rain by the mercy and grace of Allah,' he is a believer in Me and a disbeliever in the stars. As for the one who said, `We have been given rain by such and such a star,' he is a disbeliever in Me and a believer in the stars."
