Al-Hijr Verse 15

still they would say, “Our eyes have truly been dazzled! In fact, we must have been bewitched.”

they would still say, “Our eyes have been dazzled; rather, we have been bewitched.”

yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!'

they would still say, ‘Our eyes are hallucinating. We are bewitched.’

They would surely say: intoxicated have been our sights; aye! we are a people enchanted.

They would only say; "Our eyes have been intoxicated; Nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery."

they would still have said: "Surely our eyes have been dazzled; rather, we have been enchanted."

They will say all the same: "Our eyes were dazed (and clouded over). We were a people ensorcelled."

Even then they would say, “Our sights have been hypnotised – in fact, a magic spell has been cast upon us.”

they would surely say, ‘Indeed a spell has been cast on our eyes; indeed, we are a bewitched lot.’

They would say, "Our eyes are but spellbound; rather, we have been bewitched!"

Even then these people would surely say, `Our eyes have only been dazed; rather We are a bewitched people.´

They would have said: "But our eye/sights/understanding got closed and confused, but we are a bewitched/enchanted nation."

Even then they would say, "Our sights have been hypnotised - in fact, a magic spell has been cast upon us."

They would only say, "Our eye-sight is only intoxicated; nay, we have been bewitched by sorcery (or hypnotized)!"

They would surely say: "Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled. Nay, we are a people bewitched."

And even if We open to them a gate of heaven, and they keep on ascending into it,

They would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people.

They would say: Our sight is wrong - nay, but we are folk bewitched.

they would have said, "Our eyes are bewildered and we have been affected by magic."

still they would say: 'Our eyes were dazzled; truly, we must have been a bewitched people'

They would surely say (in the evening): "Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled (we have not seen any angel or heaven). Nay, we are a people bewitched."

they would still say, "Our eyes have been dazzled. We are bewitched."

They would still say, “Our eyes are hallucinating; in fact, we are people bewitched.”

they would say, `It is merely that our eyes have been dazzled, they have been shut. Nay, we are a folk bewitched!', imagining this.

And even if We opened to them a gate to the heavens and they were to continue ascending through it (all day long). They would surely say (in the evening);"Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled (we have not seen any angel or heaven). Nay, we are a people bewitched."

Allah explains the extent of their disbelief and stubborn resistance to the truth by stating that even if a door to heaven were to be opened for them, and they were to be taken up through it, they would still not believe. Rather, they would say;

إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا

Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled.

Mujahid, Ibn Kathir and Ad-Dahhak said,

"this means our vision has been blocked."
Qatadah narrated that Ibn Abbas said,
"this means our eyesight has been taken away."
Al-Awfi reported that Ibn Abbas said,

"this means we were confused and put under a spell."

سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا

Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled.

Ibn Zayd said;

"The one who is dazzled (lit. intoxicated) is the one who cannot reason.
