walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
jāahum
جَآءَهُمْ
came to them
rasūlun
رَسُولٌ
a Messenger
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
from among them
fakadhabūhu
فَكَذَّبُوهُ
but they denied him;
fa-akhadhahumu
فَأَخَذَهُمُ
so seized them
l-ʿadhābu
ٱلْعَذَابُ
the punishment
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
ẓālimūna
ظَٰلِمُونَ
(were) wrongdoers.

Wa laqad jaaa'ahum Rasoolum minhum fakazzaboohu fa akhazahumul 'azaabu wa hum zaalimoon

Sahih International:

And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.

And a messenger from them had come to them so they denied him , so the torture took/punished them , and (while) they are unjust/oppressive.

And Allah sets forth a parable: A town safe and secure, to which its means of subsistence came in abundance from every quarter; but it disbelieved in Allah’s favours, so Allah made it taste a pall of hunger and fear because of what they wrought.

23 Tafsir jalalayn

And verily there came to them a messenger from among them, Muhammad (s), but they denied him, and so the chastisement, of hunger and fear, seized them while they were evildoers.

There has come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him, so the torment seized them while they were wrongdoers
