Al-Mu'minun Verse 68

Is it because they have never contemplated the Word ˹of Allah˺? Or ˹because˺ there has come to them something that did not come to their forefathers?

Have they not pondered the Words [of Allah], or has there come to them what did not come to their forefathers?

Have they not pondered the saying, or came there upon them that which came not upon their fathers, the ancients?

Have they not contemplated the Word of God? Has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?

Pondered they not over the Word? or came there unto them that which came not unto their fathers ancient?

Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old?

Did they never ponder over this Word (of God)? Or has he (to wit, the Messenger) brought something the like of which did not come to their forefathers of yore?

Why did they not think over the message? Or has something come to them which had not come to their fathers?

Have they not pondered the matter, or did that come to them, which did not come to their forefathers?

Have they not contemplated the Discourse, or has anything come to them [in it] that did not come to their forefathers?

Have they ever pondered over this Word (of God) or has there come to them something (completely novel in human history) which never came to their forefathers of old?

Have they not then pondered over the (Divine) word? As a matter of fact there has come to them that which had not come to their fathers of old.

Did they not consider/regulate the word/opinion and belief ? Or came to them what did not come (to) their fathers, the first/beginners?240

Have they not pondered the matter, or did that come to them, which did not come to their forefathers?

In arrogant scorn thereof, raving vain nonsensical tales by night.

Have they not pondered over the Word (of Allah, i.e. what is sent down to the Prophet SAW), or has there come to them what had not come to their fathers of old?

Haughtily, passing nights in talking nonsense about it.

Is it then that they do not ponder over what is said, or is it that there has come to them that which did not come to their fathers of old?

Have they not pondered the Word, or hath that come unto them which came not unto their fathers of old?

Was it that you did not give any thought to it (the Quran)? Was it different from what was revealed to your fathers?

Should they not think upon the saying? Or, did anything come upon them that had not come upon their ancient forefathers?

Have they not pondered over the Word, or has there come to them what had not come to their fathers of old

Have they not pondered over the word of God? Has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?

Have they not pondered the Word? Or has there come to them what came not to their forefathers of old?

God, exalted be He, says; Have they not contemplated (yaddabbar should actually be yatadabbar, but the t' has been assimilated with the dl) the discourse, namely, the Qur'n that is proof of the Prophet's sincerity, or has there come upon them that which has not come upon their forefathers?

Refutation and Condemnation of the Idolators

Allah says;

أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا الْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَاءهُم مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ ابَاءهُمُ الاَْوَّلِينَ



Have they not pondered over the Word, or has there come to them what had not come to their fathers of old,

Allah denounces the idolators for not understanding the Qur'an or contemplating its meaning, and for turning away from it, even though they had been addressed specifically in this Book which Allah did not reveal to any Messenger more perfect and noble, and especially since no Book or warner had come to their forefathers who had died during the Jahiliyyah.

What these people, upon whom the blessing had been bestowed, should have done, was to accept it and give thanks for it, and try to understand it and act in accordance with it night and day, as was done by the wise ones among them who became Muslim and followed the Messenger, may Allah be pleased with them.

أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا الْقَوْلَ


Have they not pondered over the Word,

Qatadah said,

"Because, by Allah, if the people had pondered the meaning and understood it properly, they would have found in the Qur'an a deterrent to disobeying Allah. But they only paid attention to the Ayat which are not entirely clear, and so they were destroyed because of that."

Then Allah says, denouncing the disbelievers of the Quraysh;

أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ
