وَتَفَقَّدَ الطَّيْرَ فَقَالَ مَا لِيَ لَآ اَرَى الْهُدْهُدَۖ اَمْ كَانَ مِنَ الْغَاۤىِٕبِيْنَ   ( النمل: ٢٠ )

وَتَفَقَّدَ
And he inspected

the birds
faqāla
فَقَالَ
and said

أَرَى
I see
l-hud'huda
ٱلْهُدْهُدَ
the hoopoe
am
أَمْ
or
kāna
كَانَ
is he
mina
مِنَ
from
l-ghāibīna
ٱلْغَآئِبِينَ
the absent?

Wa tafaqqadat taira faqaala maa liya laaa aral hud hud, am kaana minal ghaaa'ibeen (an-Naml 27:20)

Sahih International:

And he took attendance of the birds and said, "Why do I not see the hoopoe – or is he among the absent? (An-Naml [27] : 20)

1 Mufti Taqi Usmani

And (once) he (Sulaimān) checked the birds and said, “How is it with me that I do not see the hudhud (hoopoe)? Rather he has disappeared.
