Ali 'Imran Verse 137

Similar situations came to pass before you, so travel throughout the land and see the fate of the deniers.

There were nations that passed before you; so travel through the land and see how was the end of the deniers.

Divers institutions have passed away before you; journey in the land, and behold how was the end of those that cried lies.

God’s ways have operated before your time: travel through the land, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved.

Dispensations have gone forth before you go about then on the earth, and behold what wise hath been the end of the beliers!

Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you; travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth.

Many eras have passed before you. Go about, then, in the land and behold the end of those who gave the lie to (the directives and ordinances of Allah).

There have been many dispensations before you; so travel in the land and see what befell those who denied the truth.

Some traditions have been tried before you – therefore travel in the land and see what sort of fate befell those who denied.

Certain [Divine] precedents have passed before you. So travel through the land and observe how was the fate of the deniers.

Assuredly, before you have passed many ways of life and practices (that illustrate the law God has established for the life of human societies). Go about, then, on the earth and behold how the outcome was for those who denied (God’s manifest signs and Messengers).

Surely, there have been diverse dispensations before you, so travel in the land and see how evil was the fate of those who cried lies (to the Prophets).

Laws/ways had past/left from before you, so move/walk in the earth/Planet Earth, so look/consider how was the liars`/denier`s end (result) .

Some traditions have been tried before you - therefore travel in the land and see what sort of fate befell those who denied.

This is an explanation unto men, and a guidance and a warning unto those who fear evil.

Many similar ways (and mishaps of life) were faced by nations (believers and disbelievers) that have passed away before you (as you have faced in the battle of Uhud), so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved (in the Oneness of Allah, and disobeyed Him and His Messengers).

Their reward is protection from their Lord, and Gardens wherein flow rivers, to abide in them. And excellent is the reward of the workers!

Indeed there have been examples before you; therefore travel in the earth and see what was the end of the rejecters.

Systems have passed away before you. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for those who did deny (the messengers).

Different traditions existed in the past. Travel in the land and find out about the fate of those who rejected the Truth.

There have been examples before you. Journey in the land and see what was the fate of the liars.

Many similar ways (and mishaps of life) were faced [by nations (believers and disbelievers) that have passed away] before you, so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied.

There are many examples [of the communities] that have passed away before you: travel through the land, and see what was the end of those who rejected the Truth.

Many societies have passed away before you. So travel the earth and note the fate of the deniers.

The following was revealed regarding the defeat at Uhud; Ways of life have passed away before you, all manner of unbelief has preceded, where they have been given respite but are then seized [with punishment]; so travel in the land, O believers, and behold how was the end of those who denied, the messengers, that is, how their affair ended in destruction. So do not grieve on account of their victory, I am only giving them respite until their appointed time.

The Wisdom Behind the Losses Muslims Suffered During Uhud

Allah states to His believing servants who suffered losses in the battle of Uhud, including seventy dead,

قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ سُنَنٌ

Many similar ways (and mishaps of life) were faced before you,

for the previous nations who followed their Prophets before you, they too suffered losses. However, the good end was theirs, and the ultimate defeat was for the disbelievers.

This is why Allah said,

فَسِيرُواْ فِي الَارْضِ فَانْظُرُواْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُكَذَّبِينَ



so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied.
