Sahih International:

And We have already sent messengers before you to their peoples, and they came to them with clear evidences; then We took retribution from those who committed crimes, and incumbent upon Us was support of the believers.

1 A. J. Arberry

Indeed, We sent before thee Messengers unto their people, and they brought them the clear signs; then We took vengeance upon those who sinned; and it was ever a duty incumbent upon Us, to help the believers.

2 Abdul Haleem

Before you [Muhammad], We sent mes-sengers, each to their own people: they brought them clear proofs and then We punished the evildoers. We make it Our duty to help the believers.

3 Abdul Majid Daryabadi

And assuredly We sent apostles before thee unto their people. They brought them manifest signs. Then We took vengeance upon those who transgressed. And incumbent upon us was avengement of the believers.

We did indeed send, before thee, messengers to their (respective) peoples, and they came to them with Clear Signs; then, to those who transgressed, We meted out Retribution; and it was due from Us to aid those who believed.

5 Abul Ala Maududi

We sent Messengers before you to their respective nations, and they brought Clear Signs to them. Then We took vengeance upon those who acted wickedly. It was incumbent on Us to come to the aid of the believers.

6 Ahmed Ali

Verily We sent many apostles before you to their people, who brought clear signs with them. Then We retributed those who were sinful. It is a duty incumbent on Us to help the believers.

7 Ahmed Raza Khan

And indeed We sent several Noble Messengers before you, to their nations – so they came to them with clear signs – We therefore took revenge from the guilty; and it is incumbent upon Our mercy, to help the Muslims.

8 Ali Quli Qarai

Certainly We sent apostles to their people before you, and they brought them manifest proofs. Then We took vengeance upon those who were guilty, and it was a must for Us to help the faithful.

9 Ali Ünal

Indeed We sent before you (O Messenger, other) Messengers each to his own people, and they came to them with clear proofs (of the truth of God’s Unity and Sovereignty). Then, We took retribution from those who disbelieved and were committed to accumulating sin. We have bound Ourselves to rescue the believers.

10 Amatul Rahman Omar

Indeed, We have already sent Messengers to their (respective) people before you, and they came to them with clear proofs. Then We punished those who had (denied their Apostles and) cut their ties (with God). And it is of course ever incumbent upon Us to help the believers.

11 English Literal

And We had sent from before you messengers to their nation, so they came to them with the evidences, so We revenged/punished from those who committed crimes/sins, and (it) was truly/deservedly on Us the believers` victory/aid.

12 Faridul Haque

And indeed We sent several Noble Messengers before you, to their nations – so they came to them with clear signs - We therefore took revenge from the guilty; and it is incumbent upon Our mercy, to help the Muslims.

13 Hamid S. Aziz

And one of His signs is this, that He sends forth the winds bearing good news, and that He may make you taste of His mercy, and that the ships may run by His command, and that you may seek of His favour, and that you may be grateful.

14 Hilali & Khan

And indeed We did send Messengers before you (O Muhammad SAW) to their own peoples. They came to them with clear proofs, then, We took vengeance on those who committed crimes (disbelief, setting partners in worship with Allah, sins, etc.), and (as for) the believers it was incumbent upon Us to help (them).

15 Maulana Mohammad Ali

That He may reward out of His grace those who believe and do good. Surely He loves not the disbelievers.

16 Mohammad Habib Shakir

And certainly We sent before you apostles to their people, so they came to them with clear arguments, then We gave the punishment to those who were guilty; and helping the believers is ever incumbent on Us.

17 Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

Verily We sent before thee (Muhammad) messengers to their own folk. Then we took vengeance upon those who were guilty (in regard to them). To help believers is ever incumbent upon Us.

18 Muhammad Sarwar

(Muhammad), We had sent before you Our Messengers to their people. The Messengers showed them clear miracles and We took revenge on the criminals. It was necessary for Us to help the believers.

Then We took vengeance upon those who were guilty, We destroyed those who denied them, and it was ever incumbent upon Us to give victory to the believers, over the disbelievers, by destroying these and delivering the believers.

24 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And indeed We did send Messengers before you to their own peoples. They came to them with clear proofs, then, We took vengeance on those who committed crimes;

These are words of consolation from Allah to His servant and Messenger Muhammad. They tell him that if many of his people and of mankind disbelieve in him, the previous Messengers were also rejected, despite the clear signs that they brought, but Allah punished those who rejected and opposed them, and saved those who believed in them.

and it was incumbent upon Us to help the believers.

This is a duty which Allah took upon Himself as a blessing and a favor to them.

This is like the Ayah,

your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself. (6;54)

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abu Ad-Darda', may Allah be pleased with him, said;

"I heard Allah's Messenger saying;

No Muslim man defends the honor of his brother except that there would be a right upon Allah to defend him from the fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection.

Then he recited this Ayah;

and it was incumbent upon Us to help the believers.
