وَلَوْ كَانُوْا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالنَّبِيِّ وَمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْهِ مَا اتَّخَذُوْهُمْ اَوْلِيَاۤءَ وَلٰكِنَّ كَثِيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ فٰسِقُوْنَ  ( المائدة: ٨١ )

walaw
وَلَوْ
And if
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they had
yu'minūna
يُؤْمِنُونَ
believed
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
in Allah
wal-nabiyi
وَٱلنَّبِىِّ
and the Prophet
wamā
وَمَآ
and what
unzila
أُنزِلَ
has been revealed
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to him
مَا
not
ittakhadhūhum
ٱتَّخَذُوهُمْ
they (would have) taken them
awliyāa
أَوْلِيَآءَ
(as) allies;
walākinna
وَلَٰكِنَّ
[and] but
kathīran
كَثِيرًا
many
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
of them
fāsiqūna
فَٰسِقُونَ
(are) defiantly disobedient

Wa law kaanoo yu'minoona billaahi wan nabiyyi wa maaa unzila ilaihi attakhazoohum awliyaaa'a wa laakinna kaseeram minhum faasiqoon (al-Māʾidah 5:81)

Sahih International:

And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantly disobedient. (Al-Ma'idah [5] : 81)

1 Mufti Taqi Usmani

If they believed in Allah, in the prophet, and in what had been sent down to him, they would have not taken them (the pagans) for friends, but many of them are sinners.
