أَءِذَا
Is (it) when
mit'nā
مِتْنَا
we have died
wakunnā
وَكُنَّا
and become
turāban
تُرَابًا
dust
waʿiẓāman
وَعِظَٰمًا
and bones,
a-innā
أَءِنَّا
will we
lamadīnūna
لَمَدِينُونَ
surely be brought to Judgment?"

'A-izaa mitnaa wa kunnaa turaabanw wa 'izaaman 'ainnaa lamadeenoon

Sahih International:

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

', that we shall be requited and reckoned with -- he rejects [the truth of] this as well (as regards all three instances of the hamzas [sc. a-innaka, a-idh, and a-inn] what has been mentioned above [applies]).

24 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be indebted (Madinun).

Mujahid and As-Suddi said,

"Brought to account."

Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, and Muhammad bin Ka`b Al-Qurazi said,

"Rewarded or punished according to our deeds."

Both views are correct.
