he looked;

Summa nazar

Then he considered [again];

ثُمَّ
Then
عَبَسَ
he frowned
وَبَسَرَ
and scowled;

Summa 'abasa wa basar

Then he frowned and scowled;

Tafsir

ثُمَّ
Then
أَدْبَرَ
he turned back
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
and was proud

Summaa adbara wastakbar

Then he turned back and was arrogant

Tafsir

فَقَالَ
Then he said
إِنْ
"Not
هَٰذَآ
(is) this
إِلَّا
but
سِحْرٌ
magic
يُؤْثَرُ
imitated

Faqaala in haazaaa illaa sihruny yu'sar

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

Tafsir

إِنْ
Not
هَٰذَآ
(is) this
إِلَّا
but
قَوْلُ
(the) word
ٱلْبَشَرِ
(of) a human being"

In haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar

This is not but the word of a human being."

Tafsir

سَأُصْلِيهِ
Soon I will admit him
سَقَرَ
(in) Hell

Sa usleehi saqar

I will drive him into Saqar.

Tafsir

وَمَآ
And what
أَدْرَىٰكَ
can make you know
مَا
what
سَقَرُ
(is) Hell?

Wa maaa adraaka maa saqar

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

Tafsir

لَا
Not
تُبْقِى
it lets remain
وَلَا
and not
تَذَرُ
it leaves

Laa tubqee wa laa tazar

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

Tafsir

لَوَّاحَةٌ
Scorching
لِّلْبَشَرِ
the human (skin)

Lawwaahatul lilbashar

Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.

عَلَيْهَا
Over it
تِسْعَةَ
(are) nine
عَشَرَ
teen

'Alaihaa tis'ata 'ashar

Over it are nineteen [angels].
