قَالُوْا يٰوَيْلَنَآ اِنَّا كُنَّا طٰغِيْنَ   ( القلم: ٣١ )

qālū
قَالُوا۟
They said
yāwaylanā
يَٰوَيْلَنَآ
"O woe to us!
innā
إِنَّا
Indeed we
kunnā
كُنَّا
[we] were
ṭāghīna
طَٰغِينَ
transgressors

They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

Tafsir

عَسٰى رَبُّنَآ اَنْ يُّبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَآ اِنَّآ اِلٰى رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُوْنَ   ( القلم: ٣٢ )

ʿasā
عَسَىٰ
Perhaps
rabbunā
رَبُّنَآ
our Lord
an
أَن
[that]
yub'dilanā
يُبْدِلَنَا
will substitute for us
khayran
خَيْرًا
a better
min'hā
مِّنْهَآ
than it
innā
إِنَّآ
Indeed we
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
rabbinā
رَبِّنَا
our Lord
rāghibūna
رَٰغِبُونَ
turn devoutly"

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."

Tafsir

كَذٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُۗ وَلَعَذَابُ الْاٰخِرَةِ اَكْبَرُۘ لَوْ كَانُوْا يَعْلَمُوْنَ ࣖ   ( القلم: ٣٣ )

kadhālika
كَذَٰلِكَ
Such
l-ʿadhābu
ٱلْعَذَابُۖ
(is) the punishment
walaʿadhābu
وَلَعَذَابُ
And surely the punishment
l-ākhirati
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
(of) the Hereafter
akbaru
أَكْبَرُۚ
(is) greater
law
لَوْ
if
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
know

Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

Tafsir

اِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِيْنَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيْمِ   ( القلم: ٣٤ )

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
lil'muttaqīna
لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
for the righteous
ʿinda
عِندَ
with
rabbihim
رَبِّهِمْ
their Lord
jannāti
جَنَّٰتِ
(are) Gardens
l-naʿīmi
ٱلنَّعِيمِ
(of) Delight

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

Tafsir

اَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ كَالْمُجْرِمِيْنَۗ  ( القلم: ٣٥ )

afanajʿalu
أَفَنَجْعَلُ
Then will We treat
l-mus'limīna
ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ
the Muslims
kal-muj'rimīna
كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
like the criminals?

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

Tafsir

مَا لَكُمْۗ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُوْنَۚ  ( القلم: ٣٦ )

مَا
What
lakum
لَكُمْ
(is) for you?
kayfa
كَيْفَ
How
taḥkumūna
تَحْكُمُونَ
(do) you judge?

What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

Tafsir

اَمْ لَكُمْ كِتٰبٌ فِيْهِ تَدْرُسُوْنَۙ  ( القلم: ٣٧ )

am
أَمْ
Or
lakum
لَكُمْ
(is) for you
kitābun
كِتَٰبٌ
a book
fīhi
فِيهِ
wherein
tadrusūna
تَدْرُسُونَ
you learn

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

Tafsir

اِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيْهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُوْنَۚ  ( القلم: ٣٨ )

inna
إِنَّ
That
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
fīhi
فِيهِ
therein
lamā
لَمَا
what
takhayyarūna
تَخَيَّرُونَ
you choose?

That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

Tafsir

اَمْ لَكُمْ اَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ اِلٰى يَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِۙ اِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُوْنَۚ  ( القلم: ٣٩ )

am
أَمْ
Or
lakum
لَكُمْ
(do) you have
aymānun
أَيْمَٰنٌ
oaths
ʿalaynā
عَلَيْنَا
from us
bālighatun
بَٰلِغَةٌ
reaching
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
yawmi
يَوْمِ
(the) Day
l-qiyāmati
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِۙ
(of) the Resurrection
inna
إِنَّ
That
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
lamā
لَمَا
(is) what
taḥkumūna
تَحْكُمُونَ
you judge?

Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

Tafsir

سَلْهُمْ اَيُّهُمْ بِذٰلِكَ زَعِيْمٌۚ  ( القلم: ٤٠ )

salhum
سَلْهُمْ
Ask them
ayyuhum
أَيُّهُم
which of them
bidhālika
بِذَٰلِكَ
for that
zaʿīmun
زَعِيمٌ
(is) responsible

Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.
