هَمَّازٍ
Defamer
مَّشَّآءٍۭ
going about
بِنَمِيمٍ
with malicious gossip

Hammaazim mash shaaa'im binameem

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip –

Tafsir

مَّنَّاعٍ
A preventer
لِّلْخَيْرِ
of (the) good
مُعْتَدٍ
transgressor
أَثِيمٍ
sinful

Mannaa'il lilkhairi mu'tadin aseem

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

Tafsir

عُتُلٍّۭ
Cruel
بَعْدَ
after
ذَٰلِكَ
(all) that
زَنِيمٍ
utterly useless

'Utullim ba'da zaalika zaneem

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.

Tafsir

أَن
Because
كَانَ
(he) is
ذَا
a possessor
مَالٍ
(of) wealth
وَبَنِينَ
and children

An kaana zaa maalinw-wa baneen

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

Tafsir

إِذَا
When
تُتْلَىٰ
are recited
عَلَيْهِ
to him
ءَايَٰتُنَا
Our Verses
قَالَ
he says
أَسَٰطِيرُ
"Stories
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former (people)"

Izaa tutlaa 'alaihi aayaatunaa qaala asaateerul awwaleen

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

Tafsir

سَنَسِمُهُۥ
We will brand him
عَلَى
on
ٱلْخُرْطُومِ
the snout

Sanasimuhoo 'alal khurtoom

We will brand him upon the snout.

Tafsir

إِنَّا
Indeed We
بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ
have tried them
كَمَا
as
بَلَوْنَآ
We tried
أَصْحَٰبَ
(the) companions
ٱلْجَنَّةِ
(of) the garden
إِذْ
when
أَقْسَمُوا۟
they swore
لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا
to pluck its fruit
مُصْبِحِينَ
(in the) morning

Innaa balawnaahum kamaa balawnaaa As-haabal jannati iz 'aqsamoo la-yasri munnahaa musbiheen

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

Tafsir

وَلَا
And not
يَسْتَثْنُونَ
making exception

Wa laa yastasnoon

Without making exception.

Tafsir

فَطَافَ
So there came
عَلَيْهَا
upon it
طَآئِفٌ
a visitation
مِّن
from
رَّبِّكَ
your Lord
وَهُمْ
while they
نَآئِمُونَ
were asleep

Fataafa 'alaihaa taaa'i fum mir rabbika wa hum naaa'imoon

So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

Tafsir

فَأَصْبَحَتْ
So it became
كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
as if reaped

Fa asbahat kassareem

And it became as though reaped.
