هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاۤءٍۢ بِنَمِيْمٍۙ  ( القلم: ١١ )

هَمَّازٍ
Defamer
mashāin
مَّشَّآءٍۭ
going about
binamīmin
بِنَمِيمٍ
with malicious gossip

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip –

Tafsir

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ اَثِيْمٍۙ  ( القلم: ١٢ )

mannāʿin
مَّنَّاعٍ
A preventer
lil'khayri
لِّلْخَيْرِ
of (the) good
muʿ'tadin
مُعْتَدٍ
transgressor
athīmin
أَثِيمٍ
sinful

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

Tafsir

عُتُلٍّۢ بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ زَنِيْمٍۙ  ( القلم: ١٣ )

ʿutullin
عُتُلٍّۭ
Cruel
baʿda
بَعْدَ
after
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
(all) that
zanīmin
زَنِيمٍ
utterly useless

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.

Tafsir

اَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَّبَنِيْنَۗ  ( القلم: ١٤ )

an
أَن
Because
kāna
كَانَ
(he) is
dhā
ذَا
a possessor
mālin
مَالٍ
(of) wealth
wabanīna
وَبَنِينَ
and children

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

Tafsir

اِذَا تُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِ اٰيٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِيْرُ الْاَوَّلِيْنَۗ  ( القلم: ١٥ )

idhā
إِذَا
When
tut'lā
تُتْلَىٰ
are recited
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
to him
āyātunā
ءَايَٰتُنَا
Our Verses
qāla
قَالَ
he says
asāṭīru
أَسَٰطِيرُ
"Stories
l-awalīna
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former (people)"

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

Tafsir

سَنَسِمُهٗ عَلَى الْخُرْطُوْمِ   ( القلم: ١٦ )

sanasimuhu
سَنَسِمُهُۥ
We will brand him
ʿalā
عَلَى
on
l-khur'ṭūmi
ٱلْخُرْطُومِ
the snout

We will brand him upon the snout.

Tafsir

اِنَّا بَلَوْنٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ اَصْحٰبَ الْجَنَّةِۚ اِذْ اَقْسَمُوْا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِيْنَۙ  ( القلم: ١٧ )

innā
إِنَّا
Indeed We
balawnāhum
بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ
have tried them
kamā
كَمَا
as
balawnā
بَلَوْنَآ
We tried
aṣḥāba
أَصْحَٰبَ
(the) companions
l-janati
ٱلْجَنَّةِ
(of) the garden
idh
إِذْ
when
aqsamū
أَقْسَمُوا۟
they swore
layaṣrimunnahā
لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا
to pluck its fruit
muṣ'biḥīna
مُصْبِحِينَ
(in the) morning

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

Tafsir

وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُوْنَ   ( القلم: ١٨ )

walā
وَلَا
And not
yastathnūna
يَسْتَثْنُونَ
making exception

Without making exception.

Tafsir

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَاۤىِٕفٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَاۤىِٕمُوْنَ   ( القلم: ١٩ )

faṭāfa
فَطَافَ
So there came
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَا
upon it
ṭāifun
طَآئِفٌ
a visitation
min
مِّن
from
rabbika
رَّبِّكَ
your Lord
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
nāimūna
نَآئِمُونَ
were asleep

So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

Tafsir

فَاَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيْمِۙ  ( القلم: ٢٠ )

fa-aṣbaḥat
فَأَصْبَحَتْ
So it became
kal-ṣarīmi
كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
as if reaped

And it became as though reaped.
