وَإِذَا
And when
ٱلسَّمَآءُ
the sky
كُشِطَتْ
is stripped away

Wa izas samaaa'u kushitat

And when the sky is stripped away

Tafsir

وَإِذَا
And when
ٱلْجَحِيمُ
the Hellfire
سُعِّرَتْ
is set ablaze

Wa izal jaheemu su'-'irat

And when Hellfire is set ablaze

Tafsir

وَإِذَا
And when
ٱلْجَنَّةُ
Paradise
أُزْلِفَتْ
is brought near

Wa izal jannatu uzlifat

And when Paradise is brought near,

Tafsir

عَلِمَتْ
Will know
نَفْسٌ
a soul
مَّآ
what
أَحْضَرَتْ
it has brought

'Alimat nafsum maaa ahdarat

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

Tafsir

فَلَآ
But nay!
أُقْسِمُ
I swear
بِٱلْخُنَّسِ
by the retreating planets

Falaaa uqsimu bil khunnas

So I swear by the retreating stars -

Tafsir

ٱلْجَوَارِ
Those that run
ٱلْكُنَّسِ
(and) disappear

Al jawaaril kunnas

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

Tafsir

وَٱلَّيْلِ
And the night
إِذَا
when
عَسْعَسَ
it departs

Wallaili izaa 'as'as

And by the night as it closes in

Tafsir

وَٱلصُّبْحِ
And the dawn
إِذَا
when
تَنَفَّسَ
it breathes

Wassubhi izaa tanaffas

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

Tafsir

إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed it
لَقَوْلُ
(is) surely a word
رَسُولٍ
(of) a Messenger
كَرِيمٍ
noble

Innahoo laqawlu rasoolin kareem

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Quran] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

ذِى
Possessor of
قُوَّةٍ
power
عِندَ
with
ذِى
(the) Owner of
ٱلْعَرْشِ
the Throne
مَكِينٍ
secure

Zee quwwatin 'inda zil 'arshi makeen

[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],
