سَنُلْقِى
We will cast
فِى
in
قُلُوبِ
(the) hearts
ٱلَّذِينَ
(of) those who
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieve
ٱلرُّعْبَ
[the] terror
بِمَآ
because
أَشْرَكُوا۟
they associated partners
بِٱللَّهِ
with Allah
مَا
what
لَمْ
not
يُنَزِّلْ
He sent down
بِهِۦ
about it
سُلْطَٰنًاۖ
any authority
وَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ
and their refuge
ٱلنَّارُۚ
(will be) the Fire
وَبِئْسَ
and wretched
مَثْوَى
(is the) abode
ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
[of] the wrongdoers

Sanulqee fee quloobil lazeena kafarur ru'ba bimaaa ashrakoo billaahi maa lam yunazzil bihee sultaana-nw wa maawaahumun Naar; wa bi'sa maswaz zaalimeen

We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allah of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.

Tafsir

وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
صَدَقَكُمُ
fulfilled to you
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
وَعْدَهُۥٓ
His promise
إِذْ
when
تَحُسُّونَهُم
you were killing them
بِإِذْنِهِۦۖ
by His permission
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
إِذَا
when
فَشِلْتُمْ
you lost courage
وَتَنَٰزَعْتُمْ
and you fell into dispute
فِى
concerning
ٱلْأَمْرِ
the order
وَعَصَيْتُم
and you disobeyed
مِّنۢ
from
بَعْدِ
after
مَآ
[what]
أَرَىٰكُم
He (had) shown you
مَّا
what
تُحِبُّونَۚ
you love
مِنكُم
Among you
مَّن
(are some) who
يُرِيدُ
desire
ٱلدُّنْيَا
the world
وَمِنكُم
and among you
مَّن
(are some) who
يُرِيدُ
desire
ٱلْءَاخِرَةَۚ
the Hereafter
ثُمَّ
Then
صَرَفَكُمْ
He diverted you
عَنْهُمْ
from them
لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْۖ
so that He may test you
وَلَقَدْ
And surely
عَفَا
He forgave
عَنكُمْۗ
you
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ذُو
(is the) Possessor
فَضْلٍ
(of) Bounty
عَلَى
for
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
the believers

Wa laqad sadaqakumul laahu wa'dahooo iz tahussoo nahum bi iznihee hattaaa izaa fashiltim wa tanaaza'tum fil amri wa 'asaitum mim ba'di maaa araakum maa tuhibboon; minkum mai yureedud dunyaa wa minkum mai yureedul Aakhirah; summa sarafakum 'anhum sarafakum 'anhum liyabtaliyakum wa laqad 'afaa 'ankum; wallaahu zoo fadlin 'alal mu'mineen

And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (^)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers.

[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allah repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allah is [fully] Aware of what you do.

your hearts
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah

Summa anzala 'alaikum mim ba'dil ghammi amanatan nu'aasai yaghshaa taaa' ifatam minkum wa taaa'ifatun qad ahammathum anfusuhum yazunnoona billaahi ghairal haqqi zannal jaahiliyyati yaqooloona hal lanaa minal amri min shai'; qul innal amra kullahoo lillaah; yukhfoona fee anfusihim maa laa yubdoona laka yaqooloona law kaana lanaa minal amri shai'ummaa qutilnaa haahunaa; qul law kuntum fee buyootikum labarazal lazeena kutiba 'alaihimul qatlu ilaa madaaji'ihim wa liyabtaliyal laahu maa fee sudoorikum wa liyumah hisa maa fee quloobikum; wallaahu 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor

Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth – the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allah." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, we [i.e., some of us] would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.

Tafsir

إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
تَوَلَّوْا۟
turned back
مِنكُمْ
among you
يَوْمَ
(on the) day

they (had) earned
وَلَقَدْ

All-Forbearing

Innal lazeena tawallaw minkum yawmal taqal jam'aani innamas tazallahumush Shaitaanu biba'di maa kasaboo wa laqad 'afal laahu 'anhum; innnal laaha Ghafoorum Haleem

Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uhud] – it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allah has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.

Tafsir

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe[d]!
لَا
(Do) not
تَكُونُوا۟
be
كَٱلَّذِينَ
like those who
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
وَقَالُوا۟
and they said
لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ
about their brothers
إِذَا
when
ضَرَبُوا۟
they traveled
فِى
in

the earth
أَوْ
or
كَانُوا۟
they were
غُزًّى
fighting
لَّوْ
"if
كَانُوا۟
they had been
عِندَنَا
with us
مَا
not
مَاتُوا۟
they (would have) died
وَمَا
and not
قُتِلُوا۟
they (would have) been killed"
لِيَجْعَلَ
So makes
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
ذَٰلِكَ
that
حَسْرَةً
a regret
فِى
in
قُلُوبِهِمْۗ
their hearts
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
يُحْىِۦ
gives life
وَيُمِيتُۗ
and causes death
وَٱللَّهُ
and Allah
بِمَا
of what
تَعْمَلُونَ
you do
بَصِيرٌ
(is) All-Seer

Yaaa ayyuhul lazeena aamanoo laa takoonoo kallazeena kafaroo wa qaaloo li ikhwaanihim izaa daraboo fil ardi aw kaanoo ghuzzal law kaanoo 'indanaa maa maatoo wa maa qutiloo liyaj'alal laahu zaalika hasratan fee quloobihim; qallaahu yuhyee wa yumeet; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer

O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allah makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allah who gives life and causes death, and Allah is Seeing of what you do.

Tafsir

وَلَئِن
And if
قُتِلْتُمْ
you are killed
فِى
in
سَبِيلِ
(the) way
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
أَوْ
or
مُتُّمْ
die[d] -
لَمَغْفِرَةٌ
certainly forgiveness
مِّنَ
from
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
وَرَحْمَةٌ
and Mercy
خَيْرٌ
(are) better
مِّمَّا
than what
يَجْمَعُونَ
they accumulate

Wa la'in qutiltum fee sabeelil laahi aw muttum lamaghfiratum minal laahi wa rahmatun khairum mimmaa yajma'oon

And if you are killed in the cause of Allah or die – then forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].

Tafsir

وَلَئِن
And if
مُّتُّمْ
you die
أَوْ
or
قُتِلْتُمْ
are killed
لَإِلَى
surely to
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
تُحْشَرُونَ
you will be gathered

Wa la'im muttum 'aw qutiltumla ilal laahi tuhsharoon

And whether you die or are killed, unto Allah you will be gathered.

Tafsir

فَبِمَا
So because
رَحْمَةٍ
(of) Mercy
مِّنَ
from
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
لِنتَ
you dealt gently
لَهُمْۖ
with them
وَلَوْ
And if
كُنتَ
you had been
فَظًّا
rude
غَلِيظَ
(and) harsh
ٱلْقَلْبِ
(at) [the] heart
لَٱنفَضُّوا۟
surely they (would have) dispersed
مِنْ
from
حَوْلِكَۖ
around you
فَٱعْفُ
Then pardon
عَنْهُمْ
[from] them
وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ
and ask forgiveness
لَهُمْ
for them
وَشَاوِرْهُمْ
and consult them
فِى
in
ٱلْأَمْرِۖ
the matter
فَإِذَا
Then when
عَزَمْتَ
you have decided
فَتَوَكَّلْ
then put trust
عَلَى
on
ٱللَّهِۚ
Allah
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
يُحِبُّ
loves
ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ
the ones who put trust (in Him)

Fabimaa rahmatim minal laahi linta lahum wa law kunta fazzan ghaleezal qalbi lanfaddoo min hawlika fafu 'anhum wastaghfir lahum wa shaawirhum fil amri fa izaa 'azamta fatawakkal 'alal laah; innallaaha yuhibbul mutawak kileen

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

Tafsir

إِن
If
يَنصُرْكُمُ
helps you
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
فَلَا
then not
غَالِبَ
(can) overcome
لَكُمْۖ
[for] you
وَإِن
and if
يَخْذُلْكُمْ
He forsakes you
فَمَن
then who
ذَا
(is)
ٱلَّذِى
the one who
يَنصُرُكُم
can help you
مِّنۢ
from?
بَعْدِهِۦۗ
after Him?
وَعَلَى
And on
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ
let put (their) trust
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
the believers

Iny-yansurkumul laahu falaa ghaaliba lakum wa iny-yakhzulkum faman zal lazee yansurukum mim ba'dih; wa 'alal laahi falyatawakkalil mu'minoon

If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely.
