أَمْ
Or
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ
have We given them
كِتَٰبًا
a book
مِّن
before it
قَبْلِهِۦ
before it
فَهُم
so they
بِهِۦ
to it
مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ
(are) holding fast?

Am aatainaahum Kitaabam min qablihee fahum bihee mustamsikoon

Or have We given them a book before it [i.e., the Quran] to which they are adhering?

Tafsir

بَلْ
Nay
قَالُوٓا۟
they say
إِنَّا
"Indeed we
وَجَدْنَآ
[we] found
ءَابَآءَنَا
our forefathers
عَلَىٰٓ
upon
أُمَّةٍ
a religion
وَإِنَّا
and indeed we
عَلَىٰٓ
on
ءَاثَٰرِهِم
their footsteps
مُّهْتَدُونَ
(are) guided"

Bal qaalooo innaa wajadnaaa aabaaa'anaa 'alaaa ummatinw wa innaa 'alaaa aasaarihim muhtadoon

Rather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."

Tafsir

وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And thus
مَآ
not
أَرْسَلْنَا
We sent
مِن
before you
قَبْلِكَ
before you
فِى
in
قَرْيَةٍ
a town
مِّن
any
نَّذِيرٍ
warner
إِلَّا
except
قَالَ
said
مُتْرَفُوهَآ
(the) wealthy ones of it
إِنَّا
"Indeed, we
وَجَدْنَآ
[we] found
ءَابَآءَنَا
our forefathers
عَلَىٰٓ
on
أُمَّةٍ
a religion
وَإِنَّا
and indeed, we
عَلَىٰٓ
[on]
ءَاثَٰرِهِم
their footsteps
مُّقْتَدُونَ
(are) following"

Wa kazaalika maaa arsalnaa min qablika fee qaryatim min nazeerin illaa qaala mutrafoohaaa innaa wajadnaaa aabaaa'anaa 'alaaa ummatinw wa innaa 'alaaa aasaarihim muqtadoon

And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."

Tafsir

قَٰلَ
He said
أَوَلَوْ
"Even if
جِئْتُكُم
I brought you
بِأَهْدَىٰ
better guidance
مِمَّا
than what
وَجَدتُّمْ
you found
عَلَيْهِ
on it
ءَابَآءَكُمْۖ
your forefathers?"
قَالُوٓا۟
They said
إِنَّا
"Indeed we
بِمَآ
with what
أُرْسِلْتُم
you are sent
بِهِۦ
with [it]
كَٰفِرُونَ
(are) disbelievers"

Qaala awa law ji'tukum bi ahdaa mimmaa wajattum 'alaihi aabaaa'akum qaalooo innaa bimaaa ursiltum bihee kaafiroon

[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."

Tafsir

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا
So We took retribution
مِنْهُمْۖ
from them
فَٱنظُرْ
Then see
كَيْفَ
how
كَانَ
was
عَٰقِبَةُ
(the) end
ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
(of) the deniers

Fantaqamnaa minhum fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mukazzibeen

So We took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.

Tafsir

وَإِذْ
And when
قَالَ
Ibrahim said
إِبْرَٰهِيمُ
Ibrahim said
لِأَبِيهِ
to his father
وَقَوْمِهِۦٓ
and his people
إِنَّنِى
"Indeed, I (am)
بَرَآءٌ
disassociated
مِّمَّا
from what
تَعْبُدُونَ
you worship

Wa iz qaala Ibraaheemu liabeehi wa qawmiheee innane baraaa'um mimmaa ta'budo

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship

Tafsir

إِلَّا
Except
ٱلَّذِى
the One Who
فَطَرَنِى
created me;
فَإِنَّهُۥ
and indeed He
سَيَهْدِينِ
will guide me"

Illal lazee fataranee innahoo sa yahdeen

Except for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."

Tafsir

وَجَعَلَهَا
And he made it
كَلِمَةًۢ
a word
بَاقِيَةً
lasting
فِى
among
عَقِبِهِۦ
his descendents
لَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
يَرْجِعُونَ
return

Wa ja'alahaa Kalimatam baaqiyatan fee 'aqibihee la'al lahum yarji'oon

And he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].

Tafsir

بَلْ
Nay
مَتَّعْتُ
I gave enjoyment
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
(to) these
وَءَابَآءَهُمْ
and their forefathers
حَتَّىٰ
until
جَآءَهُمُ
came to them
ٱلْحَقُّ
the truth
وَرَسُولٌ
and a Messenger
مُّبِينٌ
clear

Bal matta'tu haaa'ulaaa'i wa aabaaa'ahum hattaa jaaa'a humul haqqu wa Rasoolum mubeen

However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

Tafsir

وَلَمَّا
And when
جَآءَهُمُ
came to them
ٱلْحَقُّ
the truth
قَالُوا۟
they said
هَٰذَا
"This
سِحْرٌ
(is) magic
وَإِنَّا
and indeed we
بِهِۦ
of it
كَٰفِرُونَ
(are) disbelievers"

Wa lammaa jaaa'ahumul haqqu qaaloo haazaa sihrunw wa innaa bihee kaafiroon

But when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."
