قَالَ لَهُمْ مُّوْسٰى وَيْلَكُمْ لَا تَفْتَرُوْا عَلَى اللّٰهِ كَذِبًا فَيُسْحِتَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍۚ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرٰى   ( طه: ٦١ )

Said
lahum
لَهُم

Musa
waylakum
وَيْلَكُمْ
"Woe to you!
لَا
(Do) not
taftarū
تَفْتَرُوا۟
invent
ʿalā
عَلَى
against
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
kadhiban
كَذِبًا
a lie
fayus'ḥitakum
فَيُسْحِتَكُم
lest He will destroy you
biʿadhābin
بِعَذَابٍۖ
with a punishment
waqad
وَقَدْ
And verily
khāba
خَابَ
he failed
mani
مَنِ
who
if'tarā
ٱفْتَرَىٰ
invented"

Moses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allah or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."

Tafsir

فَتَنَازَعُوْٓا اَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَاَسَرُّوا النَّجْوٰى   ( طه: ٦٢ )

fatanāzaʿū
فَتَنَٰزَعُوٓا۟
Then they disputed
amrahum
أَمْرَهُم
(in) their affair
baynahum
بَيْنَهُمْ
among them
wa-asarrū
وَأَسَرُّوا۟
and they kept secret
l-najwā
ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ
the private conversation

So they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.

Tafsir

قَالُوْٓا اِنْ هٰذٰنِ لَسٰحِرَانِ يُرِيْدَانِ اَنْ يُّخْرِجٰكُمْ مِّنْ اَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا وَيَذْهَبَا بِطَرِيْقَتِكُمُ الْمُثْلٰى   ( طه: ٦٣ )

qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
They said
in
إِنْ
"Indeed
hādhāni
هَٰذَٰنِ
these two
lasāḥirāni
لَسَٰحِرَٰنِ
[two] magicians
yurīdāni
يُرِيدَانِ
they intend
an
أَن
that
yukh'rijākum
يُخْرِجَاكُم
they drive you out
min
مِّنْ
of
arḍikum
أَرْضِكُم
your land
bisiḥ'rihimā
بِسِحْرِهِمَا
with their magic
wayadhhabā
وَيَذْهَبَا
and do away
biṭarīqatikumu
بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ
with your way
l-muth'lā
ٱلْمُثْلَىٰ
the exemplary

They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].

Tafsir

فَاَجْمِعُوْا كَيْدَكُمْ ثُمَّ ائْتُوْا صَفًّاۚ وَقَدْ اَفْلَحَ الْيَوْمَ مَنِ اسْتَعْلٰى   ( طه: ٦٤ )

fa-ajmiʿū
فَأَجْمِعُوا۟
So put together
kaydakum
كَيْدَكُمْ
your plan
thumma
ثُمَّ
then
i'tū
ٱئْتُوا۟
come
ṣaffan
صَفًّاۚ
(in) a line
waqad
وَقَدْ
And verily
aflaḥa
أَفْلَحَ
(will be) successful
l-yawma
ٱلْيَوْمَ
today
mani
مَنِ
who
is'taʿlā
ٱسْتَعْلَىٰ
overcomes"

So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."

Tafsir

قَالُوْا يٰمُوْسٰٓى اِمَّآ اَنْ تُلْقِيَ وَاِمَّآ اَنْ نَّكُوْنَ اَوَّلَ مَنْ اَلْقٰى   ( طه: ٦٥ )

قَالُوا۟
They said
yāmūsā
يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ
"O Musa!
immā
إِمَّآ
Either
an
أَن
[that]
tul'qiya
تُلْقِىَ
you throw
wa-immā
وَإِمَّآ
or
an
أَن
[that]
nakūna
نَّكُونَ
we will be
awwala
أَوَّلَ
the first
man
مَنْ
who
alqā
أَلْقَىٰ
throws?"

They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."

Tafsir

قَالَ بَلْ اَلْقُوْاۚ فَاِذَا حِبَالُهُمْ وَعِصِيُّهُمْ يُخَيَّلُ اِلَيْهِ مِنْ سِحْرِهِمْ اَنَّهَا تَسْعٰى  ( طه: ٦٦ )

He said
bal
بَلْ
"Nay
alqū
أَلْقُوا۟ۖ
you throw"
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
Then behold!
ḥibāluhum
حِبَالُهُمْ
Their ropes
waʿiṣiyyuhum
وَعِصِيُّهُمْ
and their staffs
yukhayyalu
يُخَيَّلُ
seemed
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to him
min
مِن
by
siḥ'rihim
سِحْرِهِمْ
their magic
annahā
أَنَّهَا
that they
tasʿā
تَسْعَىٰ
(were) moving

He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].

Tafsir

فَاَوْجَسَ فِيْ نَفْسِهٖ خِيْفَةً مُّوْسٰى   ( طه: ٦٧ )

fa-awjasa
فَأَوْجَسَ
So sensed
فِى
in
nafsihi
نَفْسِهِۦ
himself
khīfatan
خِيفَةً
a fear
mūsā
مُّوسَىٰ
Musa

And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.

Tafsir

قُلْنَا لَا تَخَفْ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْاَعْلٰى   ( طه: ٦٨ )

qul'nā
قُلْنَا
We said
لَا
"(Do) not
takhaf
تَخَفْ
fear
innaka
إِنَّكَ
Indeed you
anta
أَنتَ
you
l-aʿlā
ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
(will be) superior

We [i.e., Allah] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.

Tafsir

وَاَلْقِ مَا فِيْ يَمِيْنِكَ تَلْقَفْ مَا صَنَعُوْاۗ اِنَّمَا صَنَعُوْا كَيْدُ سٰحِرٍۗ وَلَا يُفْلِحُ السّٰحِرُ حَيْثُ اَتٰى   ( طه: ٦٩ )

wa-alqi
وَأَلْقِ
And throw
مَا
what
فِى
(is) in
yamīnika
يَمِينِكَ
your right hand;
talqaf
تَلْقَفْ
it will swallow up
مَا
what
ṣanaʿū
صَنَعُوٓا۟ۖ
they have made
innamā
إِنَّمَا
Only
ṣanaʿū
صَنَعُوا۟
they (have) made
kaydu
كَيْدُ
a trick
sāḥirin
سَٰحِرٍۖ
(of) a magician
walā
وَلَا
and not
yuf'liḥu
يُفْلِحُ
will be successful
l-sāḥiru
ٱلسَّاحِرُ
the magician
ḥaythu
حَيْثُ
wherever
atā
أَتَىٰ
he comes"

And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."

Tafsir

فَاُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سُجَّدًا قَالُوْٓا اٰمَنَّا بِرَبِّ هٰرُوْنَ وَمُوْسٰى   ( طه: ٧٠ )

fa-ul'qiya
فَأُلْقِىَ
So were thrown down
l-saḥaratu
ٱلسَّحَرَةُ
the magicians
sujjadan
سُجَّدًا
prostrating
qālū
قَالُوٓا۟
They said
āmannā
ءَامَنَّا
"We believe
birabbi
بِرَبِّ
in (the) Lord
hārūna
هَٰرُونَ
(of) Harun
wamūsā
وَمُوسَىٰ
and Musa"

So the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."

Tafsir
