وَنَادٰى فِرْعَوْنُ فِيْ قَوْمِهٖ قَالَ يٰقَوْمِ اَلَيْسَ لِيْ مُلْكُ مِصْرَ وَهٰذِهِ الْاَنْهٰرُ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِيْۚ اَفَلَا تُبْصِرُوْنَۗ   ( الزخرف: ٥١ )

wanādā
وَنَادَىٰ
And called out
fir'ʿawnu
فِرْعَوْنُ
Firaun
فِى
among
qawmihi
قَوْمِهِۦ
his people
qāla
قَالَ
he said
yāqawmi
يَٰقَوْمِ
"O my people!
alaysa
أَلَيْسَ
Is not
لِى
for me
mul'ku
مُلْكُ
(the) kingdom
miṣ'ra
مِصْرَ
(of) Egypt
wahādhihi
وَهَٰذِهِ
and these
l-anhāru
ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ
[the] rivers
tajrī
تَجْرِى
flowing
min
مِن
underneath me?
taḥtī
تَحْتِىٓۖ
underneath me?
afalā
أَفَلَا
Then do not
tub'ṣirūna
تُبْصِرُونَ
you see?

And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?

Tafsir

اَمْ اَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ هٰذَا الَّذِيْ هُوَ مَهِيْنٌ ەۙ وَّلَا يَكَادُ يُبِيْنُ   ( الزخرف: ٥٢ )

am

Or
anā
أَنَا۠
am I
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
better
min
مِّنْ
than
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
one who
huwa
هُوَ
he
mahīnun
مَهِينٌ
(is) insignificant
walā
وَلَا
and hardly
yakādu
يَكَادُ
and hardly
yubīnu
يُبِينُ
clear?

Or am I [not] better than this one [i.e., Moses] who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?

Tafsir

فَلَوْلَٓا اُلْقِيَ عَلَيْهِ اَسْوِرَةٌ مِّنْ ذَهَبٍ اَوْ جَاۤءَ مَعَهُ الْمَلٰۤىِٕكَةُ مُقْتَرِنِيْنَ   ( الزخرف: ٥٣ )

falawlā
فَلَوْلَآ
Then why not
ul'qiya
أُلْقِىَ
are placed
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
on him
aswiratun
أَسْوِرَةٌ
bracelets
min
مِّن
of
dhahabin
ذَهَبٍ
gold
aw
أَوْ
or
jāa
جَآءَ
come
maʿahu
مَعَهُ
with him
l-malāikatu
ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ
the Angels
muq'tarinīna
مُقْتَرِنِينَ
accompanying (him)?"

Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"

Tafsir

فَاسْتَخَفَّ قَوْمَهٗ فَاَطَاعُوْهُ ۗاِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَوْمًا فٰسِقِيْنَ   ( الزخرف: ٥٤ )

fa-is'takhaffa
فَٱسْتَخَفَّ
So he bluffed
qawmahu
قَوْمَهُۥ
his people
fa-aṭāʿūhu
فَأَطَاعُوهُۚ
and they obeyed him
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
Indeed they
kānū
كَانُوا۟
were
qawman
قَوْمًا
a people
fāsiqīna
فَٰسِقِينَ
defiantly disobedient

So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah].

Tafsir

فَلَمَّآ اٰسَفُوْنَا انْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَاَغْرَقْنٰهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَۙ   ( الزخرف: ٥٥ )

falammā
فَلَمَّآ
So when
āsafūnā
ءَاسَفُونَا
they angered Us
intaqamnā
ٱنتَقَمْنَا
We took retribution
min'hum
مِنْهُمْ
from them
fa-aghraqnāhum
فَأَغْرَقْنَٰهُمْ
and We drowned them
ajmaʿīna
أَجْمَعِينَ
all

And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.

Tafsir

فَجَعَلْنٰهُمْ سَلَفًا وَّمَثَلًا لِّلْاٰخِرِيْنَ ࣖ  ( الزخرف: ٥٦ )

fajaʿalnāhum
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُمْ
And We made them
salafan
سَلَفًا
a precedent
wamathalan
وَمَثَلًا
and an example
lil'ākhirīna
لِّلْءَاخِرِينَ
for the later (generations)

And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.

Tafsir

وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ مَثَلًا اِذَا قَوْمُكَ مِنْهُ يَصِدُّوْنَ  ( الزخرف: ٥٧ )

And when
ḍuriba
ضُرِبَ
is presented
ub'nu
ٱبْنُ
(the) son
maryama
مَرْيَمَ
(of) Maryam
mathalan
مَثَلًا
(as) an example
idhā
إِذَا
behold!
qawmuka
قَوْمُكَ
Your people
min'hu
مِنْهُ
about it
yaṣiddūna
يَصِدُّونَ
laughed aloud

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.

Tafsir

وَقَالُوْٓا ءَاٰلِهَتُنَا خَيْرٌ اَمْ هُوَ ۗمَا ضَرَبُوْهُ لَكَ اِلَّا جَدَلًا ۗبَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ خَصِمُوْنَ  ( الزخرف: ٥٨ )

وَقَالُوٓا۟
And they said
aālihatunā
ءَأَٰلِهَتُنَا
"Are our gods
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
better
am
أَمْ
or
huwa
هُوَۚ
he?"
مَا
Not
ḍarabūhu
ضَرَبُوهُ
they present it
laka
لَكَ
to you
illā
إِلَّا
except
jadalan
جَدَلًۢاۚ
(for) argument
bal
بَلْ
Nay
hum
هُمْ
they
qawmun
قَوْمٌ
(are) a people
khaṣimūna
خَصِمُونَ
argumentative

And they said, "Are our gods better, or is he?" They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.

Tafsir

اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا عَبْدٌ اَنْعَمْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَجَعَلْنٰهُ مَثَلًا لِّبَنِيْٓ اِسْرَاۤءِيْلَ ۗ   ( الزخرف: ٥٩ )

a slave

أَنْعَمْنَا
We bestowed Our favor
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
on him
wajaʿalnāhu
وَجَعَلْنَٰهُ
and We made him
mathalan
مَثَلًا
an example
libanī
لِّبَنِىٓ
for (the) Children of Israel
is'rāīla
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
for (the) Children of Israel

He [i.e., Jesus] was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.

Tafsir

وَلَوْ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلْنَا مِنْكُمْ مَّلٰۤىِٕكَةً فِى الْاَرْضِ يَخْلُفُوْنَ   ( الزخرف: ٦٠ )

وَلَوْ
And if
nashāu
نَشَآءُ
We willed
lajaʿalnā
لَجَعَلْنَا
surely We (could have) made
minkum
مِنكُم
among you
malāikatan
مَّلَٰٓئِكَةً
Angels
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
yakhlufūna
يَخْلُفُونَ
succeeding

And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.
