إِذْ
When
عُرِضَ
were displayed
عَلَيْهِ
to him
بِٱلْعَشِىِّ
in the afternoon
ٱلصَّٰفِنَٰتُ
excellent bred steeds
ٱلْجِيَادُ
excellent bred steeds

Iz 'urida 'alaihi bil'ashiy yis saafinaatul jiyaad

[Mention] when there were exhibited before him in the afternoon the poised [standing] racehorses.

Tafsir

فَقَالَ
And he said
إِنِّىٓ
"Indeed I
أَحْبَبْتُ
[I] preferred
حُبَّ
(the) love
ٱلْخَيْرِ
(of) the good
عَن
for
ذِكْرِ
(the) remembrance
رَبِّى
(of) my Lord"
حَتَّىٰ
Until
تَوَارَتْ
they were hidden
بِٱلْحِجَابِ
in the veil;

Faqaala inneee ahbabtu hubbal khairi 'an zikri Rabbee hattaa tawaarat bilhijaab

And he said, "Indeed, I gave preference to the love of good [things] over the remembrance of my Lord until it [i.e., the sun] disappeared into the curtain [of darkness]."

Tafsir

رُدُّوهَا
"Return them
عَلَىَّۖ
to me"
فَطَفِقَ
Then he began
مَسْحًۢا
to pass (his hand)
بِٱلسُّوقِ
over the legs
وَٱلْأَعْنَاقِ
and the necks

Ruddoohaa 'alaiya fatafiqa masham bissooqi wal a'naaq

[He said], "Return them to me," and set about striking [their] legs and necks.

Tafsir

وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
فَتَنَّا
We tried
سُلَيْمَٰنَ
Sulaiman
وَأَلْقَيْنَا
and We placed
عَلَىٰ
on
كُرْسِيِّهِۦ
his throne
جَسَدًا
a body;
ثُمَّ
then
أَنَابَ
he turned

Wa laqad fatannaa Sulaimaana wa alqainaa 'alaa kursiyyihee jasadan summa anaab

And We certainly tried Solomon and placed on his throne a body; then he returned.

Tafsir

قَالَ
He said
رَبِّ
"O my Lord!
ٱغْفِرْ
Forgive
لِى
me
وَهَبْ
and grant
لِى
me
مُلْكًا
a kingdom
لَّا
not
يَنۢبَغِى
(will) belong
لِأَحَدٍ
to anyone
مِّنۢ
after me
بَعْدِىٓۖ
after me
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, You
أَنتَ
[You]
ٱلْوَهَّابُ
(are) the Bestower"

Qaala Rabbigh fir lee wa hab lee mulkal laa yambaghee li ahadim mim ba'de inaka Antal Wahhab

He said, "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower."

Tafsir

فَسَخَّرْنَا
Then We subjected
لَهُ
to him
ٱلرِّيحَ
the wind
تَجْرِى
to flow
بِأَمْرِهِۦ
by his command
رُخَآءً
gently
حَيْثُ
wherever
أَصَابَ
he directed

Fasakhkharnaa lahur reeha tajree bi amrihee rukhaaa'an haisu asaab

So We subjected to him the wind blowing by his command, gently, wherever he directed,

Tafsir

وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ
And the devils
كُلَّ
every
بَنَّآءٍ
builder
وَغَوَّاصٍ
and diver

Wash Shayaateena kulla bannaaa'inw wa ghawwaas

And [also] the devils [of jinn] – every builder and diver.

Tafsir

وَءَاخَرِينَ
And others
مُقَرَّنِينَ
bound
فِى
in
ٱلْأَصْفَادِ
chains

Wa aakhareena muqarraneena fil asfaad

And others bound together in irons.

Tafsir

هَٰذَا
"This
عَطَآؤُنَا
(is) Our gift
فَٱمْنُنْ
so grant
أَوْ
or
أَمْسِكْ
withhold
بِغَيْرِ
without
حِسَابٍ
account"

Haazaa 'ataaa'unaa famnun aw amsik bighairi hisaab

[We said], "This is Our gift, so grant or withhold without account."

Tafsir

وَإِنَّ
And indeed
لَهُۥ
for him
عِندَنَا
with Us
لَزُلْفَىٰ
surely is a near access
وَحُسْنَ
and a good
مَـَٔابٍ
place of return

Wa inna lahoo 'indanaa lazulfaa wa husna ma-aab

And indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.
