وَقَالُوْا لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنُ عَلٰى رَجُلٍ مِّنَ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيْمٍ  ( الزخرف: ٣١ )

waqālū
وَقَالُوا۟
And they say
lawlā
لَوْلَا
"Why not
nuzzila
نُزِّلَ
was sent down
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this
l-qur'ānu
ٱلْقُرْءَانُ
the Quran
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
to
rajulin
رَجُلٍ
a man
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-qaryatayni
ٱلْقَرْيَتَيْنِ
the two towns
ʿaẓīmin
عَظِيمٍ
great?"

And they said, "Why was this Quran not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"

Tafsir

اَهُمْ يَقْسِمُوْنَ رَحْمَتَ رَبِّكَۗ نَحْنُ قَسَمْنَا بَيْنَهُمْ مَّعِيْشَتَهُمْ فِى الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۙ وَرَفَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجٰتٍ لِّيَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا سُخْرِيًّا ۗوَرَحْمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُوْنَ   ( الزخرف: ٣٢ )

ahum
أَهُمْ
Do they
yaqsimūna
يَقْسِمُونَ
distribute
raḥmata
رَحْمَتَ
(the) Mercy
rabbika
رَبِّكَۚ
(of) your Lord?
naḥnu
نَحْنُ
We
qasamnā
قَسَمْنَا
[We] distribute
baynahum
بَيْنَهُم
among them
maʿīshatahum
مَّعِيشَتَهُمْ
their livelihood
فِى
in
l-ḥayati
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ
the life
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَاۚ
(of) the world
warafaʿnā
وَرَفَعْنَا
and We raise
baʿḍahum
بَعْضَهُمْ
some of them
fawqa
فَوْقَ
above
baʿḍin
بَعْضٍ
others
darajātin
دَرَجَٰتٍ
(in) degrees
liyattakhidha
لِّيَتَّخِذَ
so that may take
baʿḍuhum
بَعْضُهُم
some of them
baʿḍan
بَعْضًا
others
sukh'riyyan
سُخْرِيًّاۗ
(for) service
waraḥmatu
وَرَحْمَتُ
But (the) Mercy
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
(is) better
mimmā
مِّمَّا
than what
yajmaʿūna
يَجْمَعُونَ
they accumulate

Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.

Tafsir

وَلَوْلَآ اَنْ يَّكُوْنَ النَّاسُ اُمَّةً وَّاحِدَةً لَّجَعَلْنَا لِمَنْ يَّكْفُرُ بِالرَّحْمٰنِ لِبُيُوْتِهِمْ سُقُفًا مِّنْ فِضَّةٍ وَّمَعَارِجَ عَلَيْهَا يَظْهَرُوْنَۙ   ( الزخرف: ٣٣ )

walawlā
وَلَوْلَآ
And if not
an
أَن
that
yakūna
يَكُونَ
(would) become
l-nāsu
ٱلنَّاسُ
[the] mankind
ummatan
أُمَّةً
a community
wāḥidatan
وَٰحِدَةً
one
lajaʿalnā
لَّجَعَلْنَا
We (would have) made
liman
لِمَن
for (one) who
yakfuru
يَكْفُرُ
disbelieves
bil-raḥmāni
بِٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ
in the Most Gracious
libuyūtihim
لِبُيُوتِهِمْ
for their houses
suqufan
سُقُفًا
roofs
min
مِّن
of
fiḍḍatin
فِضَّةٍ
silver
wamaʿārija
وَمَعَارِجَ
and stairways
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَا
upon which
yaẓharūna
يَظْهَرُونَ
they mount

And if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful – for their houses – ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount.

Tafsir

وَلِبُيُوْتِهِمْ اَبْوَابًا وَّسُرُرًا عَلَيْهَا يَتَّكِـُٔوْنَۙ   ( الزخرف: ٣٤ )

walibuyūtihim
وَلِبُيُوتِهِمْ
And for their houses
abwāban
أَبْوَٰبًا
doors
wasururan
وَسُرُرًا
and couches
ʿalayhā
عَلَيْهَا
upon which
yattakiūna
يَتَّكِـُٔونَ
they recline

And for their houses – doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline

Tafsir

وَزُخْرُفًاۗ وَاِنْ كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَاعُ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا ۗوَالْاٰخِرَةُ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُتَّقِيْنَ ࣖ   ( الزخرف: ٣٥ )

wazukh'rufan
وَزُخْرُفًاۚ
And ornaments of gold
wa-in
وَإِن
And not (is)
kullu
كُلُّ
all
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
lammā
لَمَّا
but
matāʿu
مَتَٰعُ
an enjoyment
l-ḥayati
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ
(of) the life
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَاۚ
(of) the world
wal-ākhiratu
وَٱلْءَاخِرَةُ
And the Hereafter
ʿinda
عِندَ
with
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
your Lord
lil'muttaqīna
لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
(is) for the righteous

And gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.

Tafsir

وَمَنْ يَّعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهٗ شَيْطٰنًا فَهُوَ لَهٗ قَرِيْنٌ   ( الزخرف: ٣٦ )

waman
وَمَن
And whoever
yaʿshu
يَعْشُ
turns away
ʿan
عَن
from
dhik'ri
ذِكْرِ
(the) remembrance
l-raḥmāni
ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ
(of) the Most Gracious
nuqayyiḍ
نُقَيِّضْ
We appoint
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
shayṭānan
شَيْطَٰنًا
a devil
fahuwa
فَهُوَ
then he
lahu
لَهُۥ
(is) to him
qarīnun
قَرِينٌ
a companion

And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful – We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.

Tafsir

وَاِنَّهُمْ لَيَصُدُّوْنَهُمْ عَنِ السَّبِيْلِ وَيَحْسَبُوْنَ اَنَّهُمْ مُّهْتَدُوْنَ   ( الزخرف: ٣٧ )

wa-innahum
وَإِنَّهُمْ
And indeed they
layaṣuddūnahum
لَيَصُدُّونَهُمْ
surely turn them away
ʿani
عَنِ
from
l-sabīli
ٱلسَّبِيلِ
the Path
wayaḥsabūna
وَيَحْسَبُونَ
and they think
annahum
أَنَّهُم
that they
muh'tadūna
مُّهْتَدُونَ
(are) guided

And indeed, they [i.e., the devils] avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided

Tafsir

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا جَاۤءَنَا قَالَ يٰلَيْتَ بَيْنِيْ وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِئْسَ الْقَرِيْنُ  ( الزخرف: ٣٨ )

ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
Until
idhā
إِذَا
when
jāanā
جَآءَنَا
he comes to Us
qāla
قَالَ
he says
yālayta
يَٰلَيْتَ
"O would that
baynī
بَيْنِى
between me
wabaynaka
وَبَيْنَكَ
and between you
buʿ'da
بُعْدَ
(were the) distance
l-mashriqayni
ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ
(of) the East and the West"
fabi'sa
فَبِئْسَ
How wretched is
l-qarīnu
ٱلْقَرِينُ
the companion!

Until, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "How I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west; and what a wretched companion."

Tafsir

وَلَنْ يَّنْفَعَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ اِذْ ظَّلَمْتُمْ اَنَّكُمْ فِى الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُوْنَ   ( الزخرف: ٣٩ )

walan
وَلَن
And will never
yanfaʿakumu
يَنفَعَكُمُ
benefit you
l-yawma
ٱلْيَوْمَ
the Day
idh
إِذ
when
ẓalamtum
ظَّلَمْتُمْ
you have wronged
annakum
أَنَّكُمْ
that you
فِى
(will be) in
l-ʿadhābi
ٱلْعَذَابِ
the punishment
mush'tarikūna
مُشْتَرِكُونَ
sharing

And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.

Tafsir

اَفَاَنْتَ تُسْمِعُ الصُّمَّ اَوْ تَهْدِى الْعُمْيَ وَمَنْ كَانَ فِيْ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيْنٍ   ( الزخرف: ٤٠ )

afa-anta
أَفَأَنتَ
Then can you
tus'miʿu
تُسْمِعُ
cause to hear
l-ṣuma
ٱلصُّمَّ
the deaf
aw
أَوْ
or
tahdī
تَهْدِى
guide
l-ʿum'ya
ٱلْعُمْىَ
the blind
waman
وَمَن
and (one) who
kāna
كَانَ
is
فِى
in
ḍalālin
ضَلَٰلٍ
an error
mubīnin
مُّبِينٍ
clear?

Then will you make the deaf hear, [O Muhammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
