اَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِّنَ الْقُرُوْنِ اَنَّهُمْ اِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُوْنَ   ( يس: ٣١ )

the generations?

أَنَّهُمْ

إِلَيْهِمْ
to them
لَا
will not return
yarjiʿūna
يَرْجِعُونَ
will not return

Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them – that they to them will not return?

Tafsir

وَاِنْ كُلٌّ لَّمَّا جَمِيْعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُوْنَ ࣖ  ( يس: ٣٢ )

wa-in
وَإِن
And surely
kullun
كُلٌّ
all
lammā
لَّمَّا
then
jamīʿun
جَمِيعٌ
together
ladaynā
لَّدَيْنَا
before Us
muḥ'ḍarūna
مُحْضَرُونَ
(will be) brought

And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.

Tafsir

وَاٰيَةٌ لَّهُمُ الْاَرْضُ الْمَيْتَةُ ۖاَحْيَيْنٰهَا وَاَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهَا حَبًّا فَمِنْهُ يَأْكُلُوْنَ  ( يس: ٣٣ )

waāyatun
وَءَايَةٌ
And a Sign
lahumu
لَّهُمُ
for them
l-arḍu
ٱلْأَرْضُ
(is) the earth
l-maytatu
ٱلْمَيْتَةُ
dead
aḥyaynāhā
أَحْيَيْنَٰهَا
We give it life
wa-akhrajnā
وَأَخْرَجْنَا
and We bring forth
min'hā
مِنْهَا
from it
ḥabban
حَبًّا
grain
famin'hu
فَمِنْهُ
and from it
yakulūna
يَأْكُلُونَ
they eat

And a sign for them is the dead earth. We have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.

Tafsir

وَجَعَلْنَا فِيْهَا جَنّٰتٍ مِّنْ نَّخِيْلٍ وَّاَعْنَابٍ وَّفَجَّرْنَا فِيْهَا مِنَ الْعُيُوْنِۙ  ( يس: ٣٤ )

wajaʿalnā
وَجَعَلْنَا
And We placed
fīhā
فِيهَا
therein
jannātin
جَنَّٰتٍ
gardens
min
مِّن
of
nakhīlin
نَّخِيلٍ
date-palms
wa-aʿnābin
وَأَعْنَٰبٍ
and grapevines
wafajjarnā
وَفَجَّرْنَا
and We caused to gush forth
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
mina
مِنَ
of
l-ʿuyūni
ٱلْعُيُونِ
the springs

And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs –

Tafsir

لِيَأْكُلُوْا مِنْ ثَمَرِهٖۙ وَمَا عَمِلَتْهُ اَيْدِيْهِمْ ۗ اَفَلَا يَشْكُرُوْنَ   ( يس: ٣٥ )

liyakulū
لِيَأْكُلُوا۟
That they may eat

ثَمَرِهِۦ
its fruit
wamā
وَمَا
And not
ʿamilathu
عَمِلَتْهُ
made it
aydīhim
أَيْدِيهِمْۖ
their hands
afalā
أَفَلَا
So will not
yashkurūna
يَشْكُرُونَ
they be grateful?

That they may eat of His fruit. And their hands have not produced it, so will they not be grateful?

Tafsir

سُبْحٰنَ الَّذِيْ خَلَقَ الْاَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا مِمَّا تُنْۢبِتُ الْاَرْضُ وَمِنْ اَنْفُسِهِمْ وَمِمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ  ( يس: ٣٦ )

سُبْحَٰنَ
Glory be
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(to) the One Who
khalaqa
خَلَقَ
created
l-azwāja
ٱلْأَزْوَٰجَ
(in) pairs
kullahā
كُلَّهَا
all
mimmā
مِمَّا
of what
tunbitu
تُنۢبِتُ
grows
l-arḍu
ٱلْأَرْضُ
the earth
wamin
وَمِنْ
and of
anfusihim
أَنفُسِهِمْ
themselves
wamimmā
وَمِمَّا
and of what
لَا
not
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
they know

Exalted is He who created all pairs – from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.

Tafsir

وَاٰيَةٌ لَّهُمُ الَّيْلُ ۖنَسْلَخُ مِنْهُ النَّهَارَ فَاِذَا هُمْ مُّظْلِمُوْنَۙ  ( يس: ٣٧ )

waāyatun
وَءَايَةٌ
And a Sign
lahumu
لَّهُمُ
for them
al-laylu
ٱلَّيْلُ
(is) the night
naslakhu
نَسْلَخُ
We withdraw
min'hu
مِنْهُ
from it
l-nahāra
ٱلنَّهَارَ
the day
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
Then behold!
hum
هُم
They
muẓ'limūna
مُّظْلِمُونَ
(are) those in darkness

And a sign for them is the night. We remove from it the [light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.

Tafsir

وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِيْ لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَا ۗذٰلِكَ تَقْدِيْرُ الْعَزِيْزِ الْعَلِيْمِۗ   ( يس: ٣٨ )

wal-shamsu
وَٱلشَّمْسُ
And the sun
tajrī
تَجْرِى
runs
limus'taqarrin
لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ
to a term appointed
lahā
لَّهَاۚ
for it
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
taqdīru
تَقْدِيرُ
(is the) Decree
l-ʿazīzi
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
(of) the All-Mighty
l-ʿalīmi
ٱلْعَلِيمِ
the All-Knowing

And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

Tafsir

وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنٰهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتّٰى عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُوْنِ الْقَدِيْمِ   ( يس: ٣٩ )

wal-qamara
وَٱلْقَمَرَ
And the moon -
qaddarnāhu
قَدَّرْنَٰهُ
We have ordained for it
manāzila
مَنَازِلَ
phases
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰ
until
ʿāda
عَادَ
it returns
kal-ʿur'jūni
كَٱلْعُرْجُونِ
like the date stalk
l-qadīmi
ٱلْقَدِيمِ
the old

And the moon – We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.

Tafsir

لَا الشَّمْسُ يَنْۢبَغِيْ لَهَآ اَنْ تُدْرِكَ الْقَمَرَ وَلَا الَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ ۗوَكُلٌّ فِيْ فَلَكٍ يَّسْبَحُوْنَ  ( يس: ٤٠ )

تُدْرِكَ

ٱلْقَمَرَ

وَلَا

al-laylu
ٱلَّيْلُ
the night
sābiqu
سَابِقُ
(can) outstrip
l-nahāri
ٱلنَّهَارِۚ
the day
wakullun
وَكُلٌّ
but all
فِى
in
falakin
فَلَكٍ
an orbit
yasbaḥūna
يَسْبَحُونَ
they are floating

It is not allowable [i.e., possible] for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.

Tafsir
